Kristin Cavallari hasn’t publicly spoken much about her older brother Michael since he was tragically found dead in Grand County, Utah last December.
A couple of months later, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office ruled the 30-year-old’s death an accident due to “hypothermia from exposure to cold environmental temperature.”
Now, nearly a year after he was first reported missing, Cavallari has opened up about how she got through that difficult time, especially as it fell right around the same time that she welcomed her third child, Saylor.
“I did at the time, and I still do find a lot of strength in my children, because of the timing of everything,” she said while speaking with Us Weekly. “You can’t just stay in bed and feel sorry for yourself. You gotta get up. You have other lives you have to take care of. You have to put food on the table and get them dressed and off to school and everything. So yeah, you can’t just feel sorry for yourself.”
The former Laguna Beach star also opened up about how she and her family paid tribute to Michael on what would have been his 31st birthday this past June.
“My brother’s birthday was June 11, and so my family — my mom, my stepdad, my dad, Jay [Cutler] and I — all went out to Utah where he was found,” she said. “And we put a little plaque in the rock where he was found and had our own sort of service for him. … It was more of a celebration.”
Michael Cavallari was discovered on December 10 in a rocky area off of I-70 after his car was found on the side of the road the month before. He had long struggled with addiction, but he was reportedly in a good place mentally at the time of his death.
“It’s unclear what his state of mind was during this time, and that has them puzzled,” a source close to the Cavallari family told People at the time. “He had his ups and downs, but was turning his life around.”
