‘Modern Family’ Casts First Openly Transgender Child Actor

Modern Family has always been a show that celebrates diversity.

Now, the ABC comedy has continued its progressiveness by casting television’s first-ever openly transgender child actor.

Jackson Millarker played Tom, a friend of Lily’s, on this week’s episode. After being invited over for a play date, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) insults Tom, and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) use it as an opportunity to teach her about acceptance.

Director Ryan Chase introduced Millarker to the world via Instagram, and expressed how excited she was to have him be a part of the episode.

“This is Jackson Millarker. He’s 8 years old, from Atlanta, and just happens to be transgender,” she wrote. “He plays Lily’s friend Tom in this week’s Modern Family and he’s wonderful. One of the many reasons I love being a part of this show.”

Millarker’s big debut happened on the episode, “A Stereotypical Day.”
