On Thursday night in Rio, Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual swimming event.
However, one California news site set social media ablaze with the headline, “Michael Phelps shares historic night with African-American.”
The 20-year-old Manuel won the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle. She tied for first place with Canadian teenager Penny Oleksiak – both setting an Olympic record of 52.70 seconds.
Mercury News later apologized for their “insensitive headline” and updated the story.
