Fans of The Hills likely remember the breakup of Lauren Conrad and Jason Wahler.
In the scene, a tearful LC dropped off the remainder of Jason’s stuff and the two embraced before going their separate ways for good.
However, Conrad has now revealed that there was a lot more to that moment than what was eventually shown on the MTV reality show.
In the recent special, That Was Then, This Is Now, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Hills, the fashion designer/author explained that it was Wahler’s now well-known substance abuse problems that led to their split, and he may have even been under the influence during their goodbye scene.
“After we went on a break from filming, it was like a couple weeks in, I finally decided to end things. We broke up. I said you have three days to get your stuff out, I’m having the locks changed on Monday,” Lauren explained. “So when I saw Jason that day, it was the first time I had seen him since we had broken up. It was really hard. What made it harder was I could see he wasn’t sober.”
In the clip, Conrad accuses Wahler of acting strangely, and he denies it while trying to stop his ex from talking about the subject in front of the cameras.
“I just want to leave, and [the producers are] like, no, he wants to talk to you…Because I thought you were like messed up on something,” she says. “It kills me to see you like that. Like, you’re acting so weird.”
While talking about their breakup during the special, Conrad started to get emotional, admitting that, while her family was glad for their split, it was hard for her to cut ties.
“That really broke me, because I felt like a responsibility to take care of him, and I felt like when we broke up I was abandoning him,” she explained. “Because there were a lot of nights that I was getting 2 a.m. phone calls and I had to go pick him up passed out in the back of a club. So I was like who is doing that now, I know he doesn’t have friends who are doing it…I was like, oh god, no one is taking care of him.”
Thankfully, things worked for Wahler. The 29-year-old found love with Ashley Slack, whom he married in 2013, and went on to start a men’s sober living center in Laguna Beach.
“Jason’s story has a happy ending,” Conrad said. “He is sober now and married and very happy.”
