Lady Gaga Accused of Cultural Insensitivity in Japan for Wearing Jumper with Korean Letters
Perception is reality, at least for some offended citizens of Japan.
Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP tour landed in their country three days ago and is now on to Korea, but her Instagram shots from Japan have caused a few hurt feelings.
Kotaku reports that on 2ch, a large Japanese forum, a thread has sprung up about the disrespect inherent in Gaga’s choice of outfit. The offending jumper, pictured below, features Korean characters.
The outrage stems from the sense that Gaga doesn’t realize she’s wearing Korean lettering in Japan, and by extension doesn’t recognize the difference between the two countries.
Those feelings are increased because Japan and South Korea are in a diplomatic dispute at the moment, with both countries claiming ownership of a string of disputed islets called the Liancourt Rocks. The two nations lean towards having a tense relationship regularly, and this dispute has served to heighten it. Nationalists in Japan are not amused by or particularly inclined to dismiss Gaga’s confusion of their two nations.
