During Nicki Minaj’s highly publicized (and slightly odd) acceptance speech at this year’s BET Awards, the “Pills n Potions” rapper made sure to draw attention to the fact that she writes her own lyrics.
“I thank god that I’ve been placed in a position to do something and represent women in a culture that is so male-driven,” Minaj said. “But my point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”
With her words, many assumed she was throwing shade at Iggy Azalea, who was also nominated in the category for Best Female Rapper.
Now, after a few days of silence on her end, Minaj has addressed the rumors, and is blaming the media for twisting her words around.
“The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different,” the 31-year-old rapper wrote on Twitter today (July 2). “I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!”
“I believe we’re smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do,” she continued, pointing to women such as Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot as trailblazers in the industry. “I’ve been saying this for 5 YEARS.”
Minaj then directly referenced Iggy Azalea, stating that she was in no way trying to tear down the newcomer and her accomplishments.
“I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b[e] proud,” Minaj wrote. “That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that.”
For her part, Iggy Azalea took to Instagram to give her take on the situation, writing, “This is my mind state about everything & the only time I’m ever going to refer to this again so go nuts guys, Enjoy it. Ps. If you squint exxxtra hard you can see tiny elves having illuminati meetings between the lines in my notes app too.”
The rapper is also celebrating that “Fancy” has officially been at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks!
