While speaking at a ceremony for the Logo TV special ‘Trailblazers’ on Monday (June 23) Demi Lovato got up in front of the crowd and revealed for the first time that her grandfather was gay.
“I’ve never spoken about this before, but my grandfather was a trailblazer himself. He was brave enough to come out in the 1960s, and I feel a lot of my spirit has come from him,” the 21-year-old singer said (via E! News). “He passed away a few years later and I only wish he could have been able to see all the progress that has been made.”
Lovato has been very open with her support of the LGBT community through the years, appearing as Grand Marshall at LA’s Pride Parade just a few weeks ago and signing on for New York’s version of the event this weekend.
“It’s such an honor to be welcomed and embraced by the LGBT community so thank you very much,” Lovato said on stage.
‘Trailblazers,’ which debuts on Logo tomorrow night (June 26) is the first special of its kind for the network, and corresponds with the one year anniversary of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) being struck down by the Supreme Court.
Other celebs that appeared at the ‘Trailblazers’ event include Lance Bass, Danielle Radcliffe, Adam Levine, Pete Wentz, the cast of Orange is the New Black, and openly gay NBA player Jason Collins.
