Timeflies have been together for about four years, and in that time, they’ve already made great strides.
The duo, which consists of producer Rob “Rez” Resnick and vocalist Cal Shapiro, first met back in 2007 at Tufts University in Boston after Cal impressed Rez by freestyling over his beat boxing at a party.
Fast-forward to 2010 and Timeflies, who define themselves as “Electro Hip Pop Dub-Something,” has released two EPs, two full-length albums and a mixtape. Their most recent record, After Hours, dropped in April and featured hit songs such as “Monster,” which is gaining them a ton of attention!
Besides touring college campuses and playing at big festivals such as Lollapalooza, Cal and Rez have also grown quickly in popularity through social media. The group started a feature on YouTube called Timeflies Tuesdays, in which they remix and cover songs by other popular artists.
As Timeflies absolutely KILLED IT at AMP Live last year, we were thrilled to have them back! Roxanne Steele, who happens to be a huge fan of the group, sat down with them before they hit the stage to perform for our sold-out audience.
We loved you at AMP Live last year – What have you been up to since then?
Rez: It’s been a year? That’s crazy! I guess our album came out – After Hours. We’ve been playing a lot of shows…and we’ve just been working on a lot of music!
You guys just got to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! What was that like?
Cal: I mean, that was awesome! First of all, Johnny Knoxville was on and it was funny because there was like an animal trainer guy that was on the show. And Johnny was literally trying to get eaten by this stuff…putting himself in harm’s way! It was a fun show to be on.
Rez: And we’ve got Good Morning America next week! If we can get up for it!
Tell me about your new album After Hours – How crazy is it that your video for “Monsters” almost has 1 million views on YouTube?
Cal: That is huge! We did this song with Katie Sky…it was one of those where we heard her singing, and I think we were both out at a bar, and [we were like] “She needs to go record that right now!” And right when you hear [her voice] it’s just so perfect.
You know, it’s a deep song for us…the video, it was her first time on stage. Everything about it was perfect. We had a lot of fun with it.
Are you going to be having a big fall tour?
Cal: Definitely! We’re actually going to Asia for a good bit of August, coming back, doing an After Hours tour – we’re announcing dates soon – so, things are crazy! And we’re just keeping it moving.
Have you ever been overseas before?
Cal: Last time we talked to you were about to head out for a tour with Selena Gomez in Europe.
Rez: It’ll be our first time in Asia! Asia’s pretty cool!
Who are you excited to see at AMP Live 2014?
Cal: Ed Sheeran always kills it…Austin Mahone’s the man! We just played [the game] Head’s Up with him the other day. Quality dude – he’s pretty good at it! Little Mix…this is an amazing show!
What is you favorite guilty pleasure?
Cal and Rez: Orange is the New Black! It’s so hot right now!
What is your favorite candy?
Rez: It’s between Swedish Fish and Sour Patch Kids.
Cal: I’m gonna go Peanut M&Ms.
Which artist do you really want to collaborate with in the future?
Cal: Katy Perry’s always on fire!
Rez: Regina Spektor!
Check out the entire interview above and thanks to Timeflies for their AWESOME performance at AMP Live 2014!
