Ed Sheeran is on the verge of superstardom; something that is likely both surreal and exciting for the UK singer/songwriter.
Before he launches his North American concert run this fall (which includs a stop at the Palace of Auburn Hills in September), Ed signed on to perform at this year’s AMP Live, and fans have come far and wide to see him at this sold-out show.
Since releasing his hit song “The A Team” in 2011, which appeared on his debut album +, Sheeran has been nominated for two Grammys; one for Song of the Year in 2013 (“The A Team”) and again this past year for Best New Artist.
Knowing that his second album, x, is a make-or-break record, Sheeran signed on with hitmaker Pharrell Williams to produce his lead-off single “Sing”; a departure from his usual acoustic style.
Sheeran (23) sat down backstage at AMP Live with The Coop Show to discuss working with Pharrell on his sophomore studio effort, as well as his tight friendship with fellow pop star Taylor Swift and his favorite artists of the moment!
Your new album “x” is in stores soon – what are you most excited about with this new album?
I feel like it’s all come so quickly! I remember putting out the pre-order and being like “Cool…that will come out in a while.” Now suddenly that while is up so it’ll be fun!
What is your favorite and least favorite part of traveling around the world to tour?
There isn’t a downside to touring! There honestly isn’t…it’s he best thing! It’s why I’m in it, to be honest. So I guess it’s all upsides!
Your new single “Sing” sounds different from a lot of your music – tell us about how you came to write and record this song.
It’s pretty much a 50/50 thing with Pharrell and him really pushing me in that direction and being like “You should try this!’ It definitely worked out…it wasn’t that it was uncomfortable I just wasn’t in my comfort zone, if that makes sense. I always write songs from scratch with a guitar and he played me the bass line first and that was how we started. So it was just a different way of doing things.
How did you get connects with Pharrell and are you guys going to continue to do music in the future?
We met at the GRAMMYs and we will definitely continue to make music in the future. Yeah, he’s definitely expressed an interested, so that’s a start. And I’ll definitely follow up!
What are you listening to right now on your iPod?
I just bought Passenger’s album – the new one. I bought Sam Smith’s album. I bought that new P. Diddy song…or Puff Daddy? What’s he go by now? He’s got a song called “Big Homie” so I got that!
Taylor Swift recently knitted you a “Drake” needle point – what kinds of gifts have you given her and will you return the favor?
I gave her a gift but it was quite a weird one to get done – it was a plate with all the tour dates engraved on it. But when I was getting it done I think the dude thought I was a superfan and I trying to hurry him up like “Dude – it’s Christmas Eve!”
Her present to me was a weird one because it must have taken so long to do. It just came out of nowhere! Why Drake? Because the struggle is definitely real. And we all started from the bottom…and now we’re just a little bit higher!
MTV recently posted the most romantic things Ed Sheeran ever said with lyrics from your songs – what are you least and most favorite pick up lines?
The least favorite one was one that a fan did to me at a meet and greet…she said “Have you just farted? Because I’m catching your drift!”
I’d say the best pick up line would just be “Would you like a drink?” Or something like that. It’s a classic one for a reason – there’s no real trial and error!
In a true tribute to his growing popularity, Ed Sheeran left AMP Live to board a plane to New York City so that he can make his highly-anticipated performance at CBS Radio’s Concert on Ellis Island.
Sheeran’s second studio album, which is pronounced ‘Multiply,’ is set to drop on June 23…so Ed – can we buy you a drink to celebrate?
