Justin Timberlake is currently overseas on his 20/20 Experience World Tour, and prior to a recent stop in Tel Aviv, the pop star accidentally caused a bit of controversy.
Timberlake was visiting the Western Wall, one of Judaism’s most holy sites that is also referred to as “The Wailing Wall” or “Kotel,” and posted a photo on Instagram that featured him praying along with the caption, “The Holy Land…What an experience. I will never forget this day. #Israel”
While the 33-year-old singer seemingly meant well, his use of the hashtag “Israel” reportedly angered many Palestinian fans, with one commenting, “there was never an Israel, this was always Palestine,” according to Al Arabiya.
Another Instagram user added, “”Correction : you are in Palestine not israel #disapointed,” via The New York Daily News.
So far, Timberlake has chosen not to respond to the backlash and the photo has since been ‘Liked’ over 250,000 times on Instagram and retweeted 2,540 times on Twitter.
