Chicago SkyDeck Ledge Cracks – See The Crazy Pic!

Well this is just plain terrifying!

Many Detroiters spend time in Chicago and have likely visited the famous SkyDeck atop the Willis Tower.

Part of the appeal of visiting the skyscraper’s 103rd floor is walking out onto “The Ledge;” four glass enclosed structures which hang out over the Chicago skyline.

However, a California family visiting the tower yesterday (May 28) was in for a scary surprise when one of the enclosure’s floors appeared to shatter while they were standing on it, a local NBC Chicago station reports.

Ironically, the group, which consisted of two brothers and their cousins, were apparently joking with security about the sturdiness of the structure prior to walking out onto the Ledge and were assured the enclosures were “unbreakable.”

After hearing the cracking and quickly getting off of the enclosure, the group says they reported the incident to the staff and then began taking pictures, after which they were asked to leave.

However, The Chicago Sun Times reports that it was not actually the glass floor, but a protective coating that appeared to break.

“Occasionally this happens, but that’s because we designed it this way,” a Willis Tower spokesperson told the Sun Times. “Whatever happened last night is a result of the protective coating doing what it’s designed to.”

The SkyDeck Ledges are reportedly designed to hold up to five tons.

Have you ever been to the SkyDeck in Chicago? How would you react if this happened to you? Sound off below!
