Interview: Dillon Francis Has a Mantra: ‘Money Sucks, Friends Rule’

While he called its laborious creation “the bane of my existence,” fun-loving EDM DJ/producer Dillon Francis is excited to finally deliver his delayed debut album, Money Sucks, Friends Rule, which is tentatively scheduled for a July release.

Packed with high-profile collaborations including Major Lazer, Martin Garrix, rapper Twista and Panic at the Disco frontman, Brendon Urie, the album was titled after Francis had an epiphany about a t-shirt he wanted to create.

“I called my manager one day, and I was like, ‘I want to make a shirt that says ‘money sucks, friends rule’ in the Warriors font,” he explained during an interview backstage at Coachella 2014, referencing the distinct spray paint font used on the movie poster for the 1979 New York gang war movie, The Warriors. When he was stuck on what to call his album, Francis’ manager reminded him of the T-shirt idea.

“I was like, ‘that’s the best title for an album.’ Because I really feel that way. Friends are forever. Money isn’t.”

Francis was eager to herald the abilities of Martin Garrix, who he collaborated with on the track “Set Me Free.” They premiered the tune at this year’s Ultra Music Festival in Miami and it will appear on Money Sucks, Friends Rule.
