Macklemore Criticized For Dressing Up As Offensive ‘Jewish Stereotype’
Over the weekend, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took the stage for a surprise performance of their hit single “Thrift Shop” at a museum exhibit opening in Seattle.
However, it took the audience a little while to recognize the Grammy-winning rapper, due to the fact that he showed up in a bizarre costume which included a fake nose, beard and wig.
There’s really no telling why Macklemore decided to don a disguise to the event (Lewis was not in costume) but he is now in hot water with many who found his appearance to be offensive to the Jewish community.
The Daily Dot pointed out that the 30-year-old artist had “opted to perform dressed as some kind of Jewish caricature, prosthetic schnozz included,” while other sources have stated that Macklemore, who usually preaches about love and equality, was going against his own message by wearing the ridiculous getup.
Meanwhile, Macklemore took to Twitter to defend himself, saying that he didn’t mean to offend anyone with his costume:
A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody.—
