There’s been a lot of talk about Michael Sam’s big draft moment into the NFL.
The 24-year-old athlete became the first-openly gay football player to enter the pros when he was selected by the St. Louis Rams this weekend. This is history people. Sam celebrated like most do in that shining moment: by kissing the person he loves the most. For Sam, that happens to be another man.
And here comes the controversy!
Some found this moment beautiful and historic. Unfortunately, others did not. From a gay player being in the NFL to the kiss that was broadcast on national TV, the whole situation has been cause for discussion among those with different beliefs.
Among those who clearly disapproved was Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones, who tweeted “horrible” following Sam’s segment and has since been suspended and fined by the league.
Here’s what I think: the image took me by surprise, because like many, I wasn’t expecting it. However, I think the media has made it all a much bigger deal than it needs to be. Needless to say, this upcoming NFL season is going to be one to watch!
The Rams drafting Sam has raised some deeper issues about openly gay athletes in sports and in the workplace in general. In five years, I don’t think any of this will matter. For now, let’s let Michael Sam play and hopefully he will have a solid season on the field, because that’s what really matters. I love football, so let the games begin! Go LIONS!
