Clay Aiken’s Primary Opponent Dies Suddenly In Accident
Last week, the race between former American Idol contestant Clay Aiken and textile entrepreneur Keith Crisco for the North Carolina Democratic seat in Congress was too close to call.
Now, in a very surprising turn of events, Crisco has suddenly passed away.
According to The Courier-Tribune, 71-year-old Crisco, who founded the company Asheboro Elastics and was a former North Carolina Secretary of Commerce, died today following a fall at his home which occurred last night.
USA Today reports that following the primary election on Tuesday (May 5), less than 400 votes were separating Crisco and Aiken, and election officials had been busy counting ballots to determine the winner.
In a statement (via New York Daily News), Aiken said of his late opponent, “I am stunned and deeply saddened by Keith Crisco’s death. He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant. I was honored to know him.”
Our thoughts are with Keith Crisco’s family during this difficult time.
