Welcome to Radio Feedback, Radio.com’s weekly feature where we ask artists to wax nostalgic on the first time they heard themselves on the radio.
“It was about yesterday, wasn’t it?” Danny Wilkin of Rixton jokes when asked if the band remember their first time on the radio.
The new British band’s single “Me and My Broken Heart” has been making a steady climb up the Billboard Hot 100 and onto radio playlists. If you don’t know them yet, you certainly know the people on their team, which include producer Benny Blanco and Bieber manager Scooter Braun. And while Wilkin was being facetious about how recently they heard their song on the radio, he wasn’t kidding by much. The guys were in L.A. in late February when it happened, just running around town.
“We were in an Uber, on the way home, and we heard the beginning chords and my vocal,” singer Jake Roche said. “We dived to the front of the car, yelling, ‘Turn it up!'”
It’s easy to imagine the boisterous guys in this band getting excited, but in a British way. We rather suspect calling it yelling is an overstatement, but selling effect in conversation is a big part of their appeal. And it seems the novelty of their rise hasn’t worn off just yet.
