Chris Martin Gives First Interview Since ‘Conscious Uncoupling’ – Did He Discuss Gwyneth?
The “conscious uncoupling” of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin was first announced on Paltrow’s lifestyle website Goop late last month, and while many sources have weighed in on the pair’s split, Martin has stayed relatively mum on the matter.
That is, until now!
During his first interview since the separation, the Coldplay frontman spoke to BBC Radio about the band’s latest album Ghost Stories and seemed to be relating the record’s themes to his split with his Paltrow.
“Up to a certain point in my life I wasn’t completely vulnerable and it caused some problems,” Martin told host Zane Lowe (via E! News). “If you don’t let love really in then you can’t really give it back. So what Ghost Story means to me is like you’ve got to open yourself up to love and if you really do, of course it will be painful at times, but then it will be great at some point. I think in life everyone needs to be broken in some way…I think everyone in their life goes through challenges, whether it’s love or money, kids, or illness…You have to really not run away from that stuff. Life throws these colorful challenges at you…what we decided to do on Ghost Stories was to really be honest about it and say, this is what’s been happening.”
According to People, Lowe then asked Martin if Ghost Stories was about the “breakdown” of his marriage with Paltrow, to which he responded, “I wouldn’t use the word ‘breakdown.’”
“This was more a realization about trying to grow up basically,” the 37-year-old singer explained. “Like I said, if you can’t open yourself up, you can’t appreciate the wonder inside. So you can be with someone very wonderful, but because of your own issues you cannot let that be celebrated in the right way.”
Paltrow and Martin, who are parents to daughter Apple (9) and son Moses (7), announced their decision to end their decade-long marriage on March 25, stating, “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been.”
