Neil Patrick Harris Sounds Off On Controversial ‘HIMYM’ Ending

The series finale of How I Met Your Mother was polarizing, to say the least, but what did the cast members think of the ending?

Neil Patrick Harris, who played the womanizing ‘Barney Stinson’ on the show’s nine season run, sounded off on his opinion during an interview with David Letterman this week.

As Letterman joked that he’s needed “professional counseling” over the somewhat sad ending (SPOILER: “The Mother” dies and Ted ends up with Robin), Harris responded, “It wasn’t necessarily the happy ending people were expecting. But Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas], who were once writers on your show and the executive producers and the creators, knew this ending years ago and had played towards that.”

“I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it,” he continued. “Sometimes people’s growth doesn’t really mean that they grow up. There are certain people who you want to get in a solid relationship and really settle down and learn from things. You want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to, but Barney’s the guy who wants to bang your mom. At the end of the day, it’s not always meant to be that way.”

Meanwhile, fans have found a bit of comfort in the fact that showrunners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have stated that the show’s box set will feature an alternate ending, with both writers tweeting out the news earlier this month:
