2 Dead And 23 Injured Following Car Crash At SXSW

A terrible accident at the interactive, film and music festival South by Southwest in Austin, TX early Thursday morning has left two dead and several others injured.

According to a report from CNN, a driver who was allegedly under the influence ran their vehicle into a crowd who were waiting outside of a venue called The Mohawk to see rapper Tyler, The Creator perform.

A man and a woman, who are said to have been riding mopeds, were killed in the collision, while 23 others were hospitalized for injuries, some of which were severe according to Dr. Christopher Ziebell, the medical director at the center where the victims were taken.

CBS News reports that police stated the accident came after an officer patrolling for drunk drivers tried to stop the suspect, who was in a silver Toyota sedan, at a nearby gas station. The car then allegedly took off and began driving erratically at a high speed through the streets of downtown Austin, eventually crashing through a barrier and hitting the crowd in front of The Mohawk and a taxi before finally coming to a stop.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said in a statement that the suspect has since been apprehended, and faces two counts of capital murder and 23 of aggravated assault by vehicle (via CNN).

Meanwhile, SXSW sent out the following statement via Facebook:

Our thoughts go out to all of the victims involved in these unfortunate and tragic events and their families.
