Although Shailene Woodley doesn’t have a cell phone, she does keep up with the latest crazes in Hollywood, and when it comes to the hit vampire franchise Twilight, the young actress doesn’t exactly approve.
During a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Woodley, who stars in the forthcoming film adaptation of the Divergent book series, stated that the relationship between Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) in Twilight is “unhealthy” and “toxic,” but not because one of them is a vampire!
“[Bella] falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve,” Woodley explained.
Meanwhile, many are drawing comparisons between the Divergent trilogy and the Hunger Games franchise, as both take place in futuristic dystopian societies and feature strong female leads.
As such, Woodley contacted Jennifer Lawrence, who portrays Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, to ask for some advice before accepting the role of Tris Prior in Divergent.
“I asked Jennifer Lawrence, ‘Are you happy with your choice to take on The Hunger Games?’ And she said she wouldn’t change it for the world,” Woodley revealed to Teen Vogue. “She told me, ‘There are some things—don’t make a sex tape, don’t do drugs, don’t do things in public—that you wouldn’t want other people judging you for. But this is the best decision you’ll ever make.’”
Divergent is set to hit theaters on March 21, while the latest issue of Teen Vogue, which features Shailene on the cover, will be available on March 25.
