While many complain about Facebook issuing changes, this is one particular update that is going to make a large portion of the population very happy.
Since the incarnation of the social media site, users had the option to choose whether they were “male” or “female,” or “neutral” in their About Me section, which isolated many members of the LGBTQ community who didn’t identify with any of those limited choices.
Now, users have the ability to choose up to 50 custom identity options when editing their profile, some of which include “Androgynous,” “Male to Female,” “Transperson,” “Gender Questioning” and “Bigender.”
The site also allows users to pick which “preferred pronoun” they want to use (“him,” “her” or “them”) and new special privacy settings which determine who can see certain information.
A statement on the Facebook Diversity page reads, “When you come to Facebook to connect with the people, causes, and organizations you care about, we want you to feel comfortable being your true, authentic self. An important part of this is the expression of gender, especially when it extends beyond the definitions of just ‘male’ or ‘female.’ So today, we’re proud to offer a new custom gender option to help you better express your own identity on Facebook.”
