A Kalamazoo mom named Jennifer was preparing to throw her son Colin a birthday party next month when he gave her some truly heartbreaking news – he didn’t have any friends to invite.
Colin, 10, suffers from a sensory processing disorder as well as a social condition, making it difficult for him to relate and bond with his classmates, according to WOOD-TV.
As a result of his disorders, one of which WOOD-TV writes is similar to autism or Asperger’s, Colin frequently acts out in school, isolating him from the other kids and preventing him from socializing.
To help her son have a memorable and happy birthday, Jennifer decided to start a Facebook page so that she could show Colin how much their family and close friends care for him.
In a February 2nd post, Jennifer wrote, “I am Colin’s mom, I created this page for my amazing, wonderful, challenging son who is about to turn 11 on March 9th. Because of Colin’s disabilities, social skills are not easy for him, and he often acts out in school, and the other kids don’t like him. So when I asked him if he wanted a party for his birthday, he said there wasn’t a point because he has no friends. He eats lunch alone in the office everyday because no one will let him sit with them, and rather than force someone to be unhappy with his presence, he sits alone in the office. So I thought, if I could create a page where people could send him positive thoughts and encouraging words, that would be better than any birthday party. Please join me in making my very original son feel special on his day.”
Unbeknownst to Jennifer, there were many out there who identified with Colin’s story, and as of this morning, www.Facebook.com/ColinIsEleven has garnered an incredible 1,084,778 ‘Likes’ from all over the world.
The page and all of the amazing messages, photos and kind words are being saved for Colin for a special birthday surprise, and Jennifer is also encouraging people to send him birthday cards on his big day through a PO box address listed here.
“He’s going to have a lot of friends after this,” Jennifer told WOOD-TV. “They may not live by him, but he’s going to have a lot of friends.”
