Lionsgate Releases Statement About Death of Philip Seymour Hoffman

The unexpected death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has left many wondering what will happen with his unfinished projects, particularly, the Hunger Games movie franchise.

The Academy-award winning actor, who sadly passed away on Sunday from a suspected drug overdose, was recently introduced into the series as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which debuted last November.

Meanwhile, the two-part franchise finale – Mockingjay Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 – is currently in the works.

Deadline reports that Hoffman is rumored to have finished work on Pt. 1, which is listed as being in post-production at However, it looks like Hoffman still had about a week left of filming for Mockingjay Pt. 2, and as his role only increases throughout the series, Lionsgate is going to have some decisions to make about how to handle the late actor’s role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say that the two films will still be released as planned on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015, respectively.

While Lionsgate hasn’t made any announcements regarding the future of the franchise, the production company did release an official statement following the loss of Hoffman  (via Deadline):

“Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip’s family.”

Hoffman, 46, was found dead in the bathroom of his New York City apartment on February 2, reportedly with a syringe still stuck in his arm. The actor, who made his mark on Hollywood with roles in Almost Famous, Capote, Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War and The Master, is remembered by longtime partner Mimi O’Donnell and their three children.
