Being a mother to eight on reality television is child’s play compared to stage-managing a live interview with your teenage daughters, Kate Gosselin learned on the “Today” show this morning.
The interview followed up on a People magazine cover story in which 13-year-oldsCara and Mady assured a disinterested nation that growing up on “Jon & Kate Plus Eight”(and through their parents’ stormy divorce) did not scar them for life. But when asked to discuss that again by co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, the girls, with Gosselin seated between them, clammed up.
After Guthrie asked Mady what she’d like to tell the world about her childhood, Mady paused for a good four seconds until Gosselin edgily prompted her, “Mady, your words. This is your chance, spit out,” at which Mady shot her a look that could charitably described as a death stare. “Oh,” Gosselin said, appearing taken aback.
When Cara too wouldn’t pipe up, Kate did instead. “I don’t want to speak for them but, Mady, go ahead. Sort of the things that you said in the magazine, that years later they’re good, they’re fine. Go for it, it’s your chance.”
“No,” Mady said, turning to her mother. “You just said it.”
