Carly Rae Jepsen & Train Fight Boy Scouts’ LGBT Ban

First it was Train and now Carly Rae Jepsen is standing up to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA)’s anti-gay policy by dropping out of the association’s 2013 National Scout Jamboree, an act the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) thanks her for.

Jepsen tweeted fans this morning, letting them know she was backing out of the July 16th concert in support of the LGBT community.

“As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer,” she wrote. “I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and stay informed on the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe.”

Rich Ferraro, a GLAAD spokesperson, said Jepsen’s tweets bring a new awareness to the cause and show that America has become much more openminded about this once polarizing issue. “LGBT acceptance is widespread,” he told “Artists, corporations and sponsors are not willing to partner with an organization that doesn’t respect their fans.”

With Jepsen backing out of the show, Ferraro said it won’t be easy to find a replacement. “The only celebrities who are outspokenly anti-gay are Victoria Jackson and Chuck Norris,” he said.

Ferraro’s biggest hope, though, is that Jepsen and Train’s recent announcements will lead the Boy Scouts to finally rethink their policies. “They need to do what’s right for scouting,” Ferraro said. “They need to stop forcing young men into the closet.”
