Less than a month after the Newton, CT school shooting another one has happened. Thankfully it wasn’t a massacre like Sandy Hook. One student was critically wounded, but nobody died all thanks to a heroic teacher who talked the student into surrendering his gun. God Bless that teacher!
The 16-year-old shooter, who’s a student at Taft Union High School, allegedly wounded the teenager he claimed had bullied him, fired two more rounds at students as they ran from their first-period science class. Then the shooter faced his teacher Ryan Heber.
“I don’t want to shoot you,” he told the popular teacher, who was trying to coax the teen into giving up the shotgun he still held.
The suspect surrendered his shotgun to Heber and campus supervisor Kim Lee Fields. His pockets were stuffed with more ammunition so who knows how many other students could of been harmed.
“This teacher and this counselor stood there face-to-face not knowing if he was going to shoot them,” Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said. “They probably expected the worst and hoped for the best, but they gave the students a chance to escape.”
The shootings came just minutes after administrators announced new lockdown and safety procedures prompted by the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. How scary… I guess it’s the new America we live in today.
“Just 10 minutes before it happened our teachers were giving us protocol because of what happened in Connecticut,” said student Oscar Nuno, who was across campus from the science building at Taft Union High School when an announcer on the PA system said the school was under lock down “and it was not a drill.”
The big story here besides yes, another school shooting is the fact that this student is claiming the victim was someone who bullied him for a few years. It’s certainly not an excuse, but yet another warning to the bullies out there that you have no idea of the damage you do to another human being when you bully them. The town on Taft, California is about 30 miles from Bakersfield. The young shooter was still being interrogated Thursday evening, Youngblood said, adding that the youth will be charged as a juvenile with attempted murder. It will be up to prosecutors to decide whether he should be charged as an adult, the sheriff said. The name of this shooter has not been released.
