A$AP Rocky, who collaborated with Rihanna on the remix of “Cockiness (Love It),” is gearing up to perform at MTV’s VMAs tonight during Rihanna’s opening set. While he is rising star in the hip-hop world, the Harlem-bred rapper is sure to reach a new wave of Rocky fans with his high profile spot on the bill.
“It’s an honor,” he told Hot 93.7/Hartford Morning Crew. “Rihanna is a beautiful artist, a beautiful individual.”
As one of the rising stars in hip-hop, Rocky talked about his growing fame, and attributed his upbringing in both Harlem and SoHo as to why he is able to connect with a wide audience.
“I grew up with Asian friends, white friends, black friends, Latin friends. I am talking to an era, a generation,” he said. “I am not just talking to one class of people.”
Although Rocky is excited to perform with Rihanna, he also noted that he is not always a fan of collabos and his new label SONY/RCA/Polo Grounds stands behind his creative decisions.
“My label gave me one hundred percent creative control,” said the rapper. “That’s why I love my label, they are so supportive, they don’t bother me.”
A$AP Rocky’s debut studio album, LongLiveA$AP, will be released on October 31st and new tour dates were recently announced for this fall. —Tyler Roman, Hot 93.7/ Hartford with Bill Sencio
