This is just awful. Another shooting and this time in New York near the Empire State Building. A recently fired designer of women’s accessories shot a former colleague to death this morning, and then started shooting others near the Empire State Building. The shooter was then shot and killed by police officers.
Nine others were hit by gunfire when the shooting started at about 9 a.m. on the Fifth Avenue side of the building, but those injuries are not believed to be life threatening, police said. That’s great news! The suspected gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, 53, who was laid off a year ago, approached a former co-worker on the street and shot him three times, killing him, NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
A construction worker who witnessed the incident followed the shooter as he walked away. The construction worker alerted police, who confronted Johnson. He turned his .45-caliber pistol on the officers, and then the shooter was killed as they opened fire, Kelly said.
Our thoughts and prayers got out to the victims. Besides workers and local who are in that area daily, so many tourist there too taking in the sites. We truly never know when situations like this can happen, and they can happen anywhere at anytime.
