Ne-Yo Turns Down the Role of Martin Luther King Jr.

So many singers cross over to the big screen with hopes of building a solid film career.   Ne-Yo has appeared in the films Red Tails and Battle:Los Angeles, but in this case Ne-Yo choose music first.  The R&B singer turned down an acting role (to play MARTIN LUTHER KING JR!) over a conflict with his album promotion schedule.

There’s been a rumor that Ne-Yo turned down the role because he didn’t want to gain the 30lbs that was required to play the legendary civil rights leader.  That is not the real reason.  Ne-Yo told Britain’s Sunday Mirror:

“They wanted to start shooting at the time my album R.E.D. comes out and wanted me to gain 30 pounds, so I couldn’t do it. I’m kicking myself but acting can’t take the place of my music. Plus, I’ve been killing myself in the gym for months preparing for this album because I wanted a complete makeover.”   He went on to say:  “I definitely want to do more acting but it’s got to make sense with the music.”

I give Ne-Yo a lot of credit.  He told the director that he was honored to have been asked to play Martin Luther King Jr. but the timing just wasn’t right.  Ne-Yo’s first love is music, and where his focussed needs to be right now.  R.E.D. Ne-Yo’s new album drops on Sept, 18th.
