It’s a very sad day for hockey fans here in Detroit and around the world. Todd Bertuzzi  expressed how he was “actually shocked, big time” to hear the news of Detroit  Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom’s retirement. It was something everybody knew might happen but didn’t want to face.

At 42, there’s been talks of his retirement for awhile now.  Today Lidstrom made it official.  After 20 seasons with the Red Wings he decided it was time to move on ending one of the best careers in NHL History. As a big Red Wings fan, I got a little choked up listening to Lidstrom speak.

“The last two years, I waited until season was over to assess if I could play again,” Lidstrom said. “I let my body recover. Sadly, this year, it’s painfully obvious to me my strength and energy level are not rebounding. My drive and motivation is not where it needs to be to play at this level.”

“I didn’t want to lose that level of play that I have reached and that’s why I’m retiring today,” he said. “Retiring today allows me to walk away from the game with pride, rather than have the game walk away from me.”

Thank you for the Stanley Cups and 20 seasons of great hockey you gave us Red Wings fans.  We will miss you on the ice.
