Friday’s record breaking 640 million dollar Mega Millions jackpot had everybody AND their mama out buyin lottery tickets. Sure it’s a long shot, but just how small is your chance of winning? The Mega Millions website lists your odds of winning the jackpot as 1 in 175,711,536. Here’s a list of things that are more to likely to happen than picking all six numbers correctly:
1. Being dealt two four of a kinds in a row in 5 card draw poker.
The chances of being dealt a four of a kind are 1 in 4165. The chance of two in a row? 1 in 17,347,225. If you were thinking of pulling some cards out of your sleeve, you might want to deal yourself something a little more likely of happening, like a full house.
2.) Winning a Grammy
This year there were 78 Grammys awarded. Assuming only people in the US are eligible to win and that everybody has an equal chance of developing the talent needed (probably not true! LOL), your chance of winning a Grammy in 2012 was roughly 1 in 4,016,346.
3. Winning The Powerball Jackpot
The chances of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510, slightly better than Mega millions 1 in 175,711,536.
4. Being struck by lightning
According to National geographic, your chance of being struck by lightning at some point in your lifetime is relatively high at 1 in 3000. Your chance at getting struck twice in the same lifetime? 1 in 9,000,000. This was demonstrated last week when a Kansas man bought three Mega Millions tickets and then was struck by lightning later that night. He didn’t win.
5.) Dating me if you’re ugly.
What can I say? I like pretty girls. Don’t worry though! If you’re less than attractive, you still have that 1 in a hundred million chance.
