Wouter ”Wally” De Backer, a.k.a Gotye, is enjoying a tenacious sort of fame with his heart-breaking tune, “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

Joining the ranks of famous musicians who have graced the Saturday Night Live stage (and some infamous like Lana Del Rey), Gotye is making his SNL début on the world-renowned comedy show Saturday, April 14–right before his Coachella dates.

Not just known for music, Coachella is also an arts festival, surely something that would pique the interest of the visually-inclined Gotye. His art has inspired many a tribute video, including a recent “Muppet” version of “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

In an interview with KROQ/Los Angeles, Gotye divulged his love of the arts, including the cover of his album, Making Mirrors. Goyte said, “The artwork is a piece that my Dad painted in the ’80s sometime. On a little piece of cardboard. He didn’t think very much of it at the time and it got effectively discarded, really.”

“I uncovered this piece and was immediately struck by it,” continued the musician. “And it took me a while. I lived with it for a few months. Finally, I ended up doing a bit of editing, a bit of photo-shopping to it to kind of tweak some of the colors and some of the symmetry to it. When I’d done that, I really decided it felt right for the album.”

“It had a really nice balance of beauty and a…mathematical sort of exploration about it which has a certain analogy to the way I think I respond on a gut level to a texture of samples.”
