Melanie Fiona Discusses Inspiration Behind New Album “The MF Life”
After the release of her debut album, The Bridge, Melanie Fiona admits she was nervous for her follow-up.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself to set an expectation to try and outdo myself,” she told CBS Local. “The recording process for The MF Life was definitely different because I’m more experienced, more traveled, more aware. It’s not my first rodeo as an artist.”
However, she confesses her confidence was gone when it came time to record.
“I really had to shed a lot of my insecurities when it came to my writing [and] my singing ability by just going into the studio for fun and getting my creative juices flowing again,” she said.
“I really pushed myself to be open and not be afraid to sing and share my experiences of what I’ve been through. So, I created The MF Life. It is a collection of songs that are about the ups and downs of love,” she said.
Fiona further explained that The MF Life is a record about living through the high and low moments of life while finding the balance in between.
“There’s beauty in that and strength. And just owning where you’re at. Living your MF Life every day,” she said.
Inspired by music in its raw sense, Fiona said she loves to listen to the story that she thinks the music is telling her on its own.
“My best songs are definitely always things that have been based off of real life. I think the best songs are the ones that are,” she said. “Whether that’s something that I’ve actually written because I’ve experienced, or I’ve seen someone go through, or someone’s writing a song for me that it’s their story that needs to be told. I think it’s all about sharing real life experiences.”
Her most emotional record to date, Fiona gets her point across.
“I don’t really connect to music that tends to not be about the root of emotion. I just try to keep it real and sing [about] vulnerability, excitement, [and] empowerment,” she said. “Things that are sexy and smooth. Give something to people to feel. That’s the music you listen to for a lifetime.”
