Mike Posner On Receiving Praise From Kanye, Working With Bieber
Currently finishing up his second album, Sky High, Mike Posner told 101.5 Jamz’ Lady La the details.
In addition to writing material for himself, Posner recently teamed up with Justin Beiber. Earlier this month Bieber said the first single off his upcoming album, Believe, would be “Boyfriend.” A track he and Posner collaborated on, the two met a few months ago.
“He’s a really, really talented guy,” Posner says of Bieber. “He has definitely grown up a lot since he’s been on the scene. My whole goal was to make some stuff that me and my boys could listen to in the car that we couldn’t deny. So, that was our goal and I think we really accomplished that.”
Posner and Bieber worked with Timbaland at Hit Factory in Miami.
“I made some of the beats and then we did a session with Timbaland,” Posner said.” That was a dream come true for me, to write on Tim beats. I had to keep up with him. So, basically Tim would make at least one beat a night so I would have to finish writing the song with Justin. I was pretty busy doing that but I would see the beginnings of it and be like, ‘Oh s*** a whole ‘nother beat is going to be done so I’ve got to go finish this other song before it happens.'”
Since Timbaland works at a fast rate, Posner tried to keep up with him.
“It was a really competitive environment. We were at Hit Factory in Miami. So, Weezy’s next door popping in and out so you want to be making some hot s*** when those guys walk in.”
Having met Kanye West through his friend Big Sean, Posner recalled West’s first reaction to his music.
“Big Sean was playing him the song we had done together and I asked Kanye, ‘Did you like it?’ and he said, ‘No. I didn’t like it.’ It killed me because I was trying to come up,” Posner said.
Lucky for Posner, a few years later West’s opinion changed.
“I saw him two or three years later at the EMA’s in Spain and he came up to me and said, ‘Mike, I really like your songs’ and I was like, ‘You don’t know how much that means to me because you used to not like them at all.'”
