[photogallerylink id=51618 align=right]The MTV Video Music Awards is an amazing night in the music industry and for teenagers/pop culture junkies all around the world. This August 28th, I’ll be posted up in front of the TV with my Twitter page open, ready to spit out my own social commentary on every moment of the show.
I really hope something NUTS pops off. This show is always at it’s best when it’s live and you know ANYTHING can happen. I’m talking about those moments that make you rewind your DVR and say “Did that just happen?!”
Which brings me to this… what are the most memorable moments in VMA history?
Well, I don’t know what you define as memorable, but I’ve counted down my TOP 10 VMA Most Memorable Moments EVER!
10. Diana Ross Grabs Lil Kim’s Breast
In 1999, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lil Kim[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mary J. Blige[/lastfm] were set to take the stage as the presenters for the Best Hip Hop video. Ms. Blige was dressed in nothing but class as usual. Lil Kim however was wearing a purple, mermaid-lookin’ costume with one of her boobs hanging out for everybody to get a clear shot at the Queen Bee’s… B!
Before checking out the nominees, Mary and Kim decided to honor the original diva of R&B by calling [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Diana Ross[/lastfm] to the stage. When the former Supreme hit the podium, she greeted Mary J. with a hug and gave Kim and nice jiggle of her exposed booby.
PS: Check out the video above to see who actually won the Best Hip-Hop Vid award in ’99.
9. Fart-Man Saves the Day!
Oh… how can we forget “Fart-Man”?
During the 1992 MTV VMAs, Howard Stern flew in from the ceiling as his alter ego of flatulence, “Fart-Man.” With the powers in his a$$, Fartman was able to destroy a piece of the podium on stage moments before [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Metallica[/lastfm] walked up to accept their award for Best Metal/Hard Rock Video.
Apparently, The Fart-Man stunt left Metallica a little pissed off because let’s face it, those guy are a bunch of babies. Either way, it sure was memorable!
8. Kid Rock vs. Tommy Lee
Hell Yeah! Nothing like a white trash bar-fight…
IN THE AUDIENCE!
In ’07, MTV had the big VMA soiree’ in Vegas and as we all know… you’re not coming out of Vegas without a good story.
The characters in this Jerry Springer story are 3 very well known players in the trailer park. The brawl included former [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Motley Crue[/lastfm] drummer, Tommy Lee and ex-Rapper, ex-Rocker, current Country singer, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kid Rock[/lastfm] fighting over guess who. Yes of course, former Baywatch beauty Pam Anderson.
The story goes: Tommy Lee walked over to Kid Rock’s table (allegedly to speak with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Diddy[/lastfm]) and spouted off some un-kind words to Mr. Rock (regarding Pam). Witnesses say, Kid Rock was the first to throw a swing — slapping Tommy Lee. From there, security broke it up.
Later, Kid Rock was slapped with a citation of misdemeanor battery for his bitch-slap on Lee. Which turned into nothing but a fine.
Way to keep it classy boys!
7. Britney’s… uhhh Comeback?!
“Oh my god, I can’t believe Britney is ba—
Wait, what’s wrong with her?”
Gaga can wear all the meat she wants, she’ll still never be half as bonkers as Britney. When she busted back on the scene in ’07 with “Gimme More” everyone was excited to see Spears get her groove back.
But then… the 2007 MTV VMAs kicked off LIVE from Vegas and Britney stumbled her way through the most anti-climactic VMAs introduction/performance I’ve ever witnessed.
It was depressing! Most guys my age had a tough time watching this disaster because the poor soul that could barely even walk on stage was the very same woman that was responsible for pushing my raging hormones through puberty.
**The best moment of this performance is when they cut to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]50 Cent[/lastfm] and he’s looking up at the stage in pure disbelief, it just makes you giggle to see the look on his face. It’s right at the 2:51 mark in the video above!
6. Andrew Dice Clay
Rebellion?? I’m in!
In ’89 the foul-mouthed friggin’ comedian from Brooklyn, Andrew “Dice” Clay stepped foot on stage in one of his giant leather jackets to spew some awesome stand-up comedy that got the Dice-Man banned from MTV for life! It was the nursery rhyme portion of his set that did him in.
In all reality, if he would’ve came out and delivered this same routine word for word nowadays… he’d be fine!
My how times change.
5. Who’s The Best Host Ever?
Who is the king of all VMA Hosts?
Chris MF’n Rock!
…and in ’99 he proved it with his second shot at hosting the star-studded event. From start to finish Chris had the entire room erupting as he verbally shot down everyone from J. Lo to the now defunct [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Destiny’s Child[/lastfm]. Chris did such an awesome job they brought him back to rock the house again in ’03.
PS: I personally think the 1999 VMAs might have been the best year in the award show’s history, IMHO.
4. Michael Jackson and Lisa-Marie Kiss
“…and just think, nobody thought this would last.”
Elvis was the King. So, it’s only fitting that his daughter gets wifed up by the King of Pop… and it’s only fitting that it lasted about ten seconds.
But in 1994 at the opening of the VMA broadcast, the newlyweds walked hand in hand down the runway to deliver a couple awkward words and one big fat kiss. While the kiss has now lived on forever unfortunately, the marriage was over faster than you can say “Dr. Conrad Murray”.
3. Madonna/Britney/Christina Three Way
The most important portion of the MTV VMAs is the kick-off. The launch of the show sets the precedent for the night. So if the intro of the show is big, the rest of the show will be too right?
2003’s VMA kick-off was HUMONGOUS as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Britney Spears[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Christina Aguilera[/lastfm] strolled out in vintage-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Madonna[/lastfm] fashion, they kicked off a few bars of “Like A Virgin” before they were joined by the originator of slutty-pop, Madonna herself. The dancing was nice and provocative and then before you know it, the three of them were locked in a set of french-kisses that shocked the world.
The legendary divas up there swapping spit was def crazy enough to crack my TOP 3 Most Memorable VMA Moments EVER!
2. Fiona Denounces Her Award
“This award is bull#*&@”
If you’re a young, up and coming artist in the music industry and you’re invited to one of the biggest nights in music of the year, if you’re somehow lucky enough to be voted on as the Best New Artist and you somehow get handed this award by the legendary [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elton John[/lastfm]… you should throw it away and explain to everyone at home how they’re a fool for watching such an asinine program.
Ya know, or just say ‘Thanks’.
In ’97 after creaming [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Wallflowers[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Hanson[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jamiroquai[/lastfm] in the Rookie of the Year category, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Fiona Apple[/lastfm] strolled up to the podium to deliver the greatest acceptance speech of all time.
“I didn’t prepare a speech and I’m sorry, but I’m glad I didn’t because I’m not going to do it like everybody else does it,— Everybody out there who is watching this world — this world is bulls—.”
1. Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift
Vodpod videos no longer available.
“Hold up Taylor, Imma let you finish…”
Here we are… one of the biggest moments in VMA history. Poor little [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Taylor Swift[/lastfm], America’s little song-writin’ princess.
As Taylor tip-toed to the podium to accept her award for the Best Female Video of ’09, she was greeted/interrupted by a drunk-ass [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye West[/lastfm]. As we all know, Mr. West famously grabbed the mic and yelled… “I’m sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.”
His drunken rant was not well-received by his peers as they booed him off stage and then gave Taylor more than a standing ovation later on in the night when [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Beyonce[/lastfm]’ of all people skipped her own acceptance speech so Ms. Swift could get up there and get the talk-time she deserved.
Hopefully something crazier than all of these moments happens this August 28th!
