Seniors in high school are graduating and having their last hurrah summer pool parties before shipping off to college (where more parties are bound to ensue.) In [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm]’s new John Hughes-esque video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),” the perky singer hilariously and fantastically recreated a high school home party.
We’ve been feeling sort of adolescent lately (don’t blame us, blame the gorgeous June weather), so we created a list of the Top Ten Music Videos About Being A Teenager. Whether you were a cheerleader, a nerd, a punk, or a band geek, there is something here for you.
10. “Teenage Dream”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm]
We know Katy Perry’s song for “Teenage Dream” is just a metaphor for crushing so hard you feel like a teenager again, but the halcyon quality of the video paired with the lyrics does a perfect job of re-creating that feeling of being in love for the first time as a teenager–and having that love reciprocated.
It’s a pretty awesome feeling.
9. “Girlfriend”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Avril Lavigne[/lastfm]
Avril Lavigne has the “perpetual teenager” vibe and her insanely cute video for “Girlfriend” is a perfect example of the teenage punk chick versus the popular preppie girl.
Boyfriend wars at the mini-golf course? An illicit rendezvous in a bathroom stall? So totally high school.
8. “Hollaback Girl”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gwen Stefani[/lastfm]
If Gwen Stefani had been the drill team captain at our high school, we would have joined in a heartbeat.
The platinum haired punkish pop star essentially wrote the perfect halftime cheer number with her song “Hollaback Girl.”
7. “Gossip Folks”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Missy Elliot[/lastfm]
After Missy Elliot lost a lot of weight, she wrote “Gossip Folks” to describe all the things the paparazzi was saying about her.
Her video for the song has been oft voted as one of the best music videos of the previous decade and for good reason: Elliot uses the snarky, gossip-oriented mentality of the high school set as the main theme of her video.
It’s also a good reminder to adults to stop acting as sophomoric as, well, high school sophomores.
6. “Popular”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nada Surf[/lastfm]
“Popular” was popular in the ’90s, but the sarcastic story behind the lyrics still, unfortunately, ring true today with many teenagers.
5. “If U C Jordan”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Something Corporate[/lastfm]
We think this song is about a dude named Jordan bullying the lead singer of Something Corporate, or just the general high school atmosphere of bullying in high school in general, but the awesome campus setting and the cute school uniforms actually make us miss high school a lot.
4. “In The Sun”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]She & Him[/lastfm]
Many people don’t know that A-list actress, Zooey Deschanel, is also a talented singer-songwriter in a band called She & Him. This video is super cheesy, but also one of the most adorable things we have ever seen. Much like Deschanel.
We bet she was one of those rare popular “nerds” in high school because she is both simultaneously pretty in a girl-next-door kind of way and totally smart. Ugh, we feel our high school level jealousies coming back. Gross.
3. “…Baby One More Time”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Britney Spears[/lastfm]
One of the most infamous high school centered music videos, “…Baby One More Time” is often cited as the song/video that catapulted Spears to fame.
Not to much surprise, as teenage girls and guys everywhere all wished they had Spears’ cheeky style and basketball court dance moves. Or her.
2. “You Belong With Me”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Taylor Swift[/lastfm]
Taylor Swift is incredibly talented at writing songs that tell a story, usually a story we can tell is sincere and true to her life.
In “You Belong With Me,” Swift is the literally the pretty, but geeky girl-next-door who would rather write music, play music, and dork out than be a pretty, popular girl.
And now she is practically the most popular girl in the world.
1. “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm]
This video is decadent, hedonistic, and downright disgusting at points–which is what makes it totally awesome.
Granted, a majority of teenagers are thankfully not throwing drunken ragers, but “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)” is kind of like a teenage fantasy music video where the ugly duckling nerd girl becomes the salacious swan just because of a make-over and some Friday night debauchery.
