The road to becoming a pop mega star is a rough one filled with long work days, endless rehearsals and tons of pressure to be on point at all times. There’s no question its hard work that very few of us could handle. No one may be more familiar with this than Britney Spears. She has seen her share of ups, downs and criticism during her 10+ year career. But the effects of the negative phases in her life have never been more visible than now.
At her core, Britney is a dancer. She has danced since age three and has provided some of the most innovative and shocking dance routines of the last decade. However, her recent lackluster live and music video performances beg the question… what happened to Britney’s dance moves?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m definitely a Britney fan. I’ve followed her since the beginning. Strangely enough, I remember the exact time and place I first came across her “..Baby One More Time” music video (it was after school on the local music video channel, just fyi). But at a certain point I had to stand back and ask what is going on?
PopDust.com put together a video with old and new clips of Britney dancing live and in music videos The difference between now and then is astonishing when you break it down. Watch below!

The first time I saw Britney Spears perform live was back in the late 90s. She was the opening act for my favorite boy band
‘NSYNC and her first single “Baby, One More Time” had just been released. She was just a sweet, innocent looking 18 year-old with an obvious talent for dancing. Looking back, the really impressive part was that she was able to sing and dance at the same time without missing a beat. Just take a look at the video below.
Fast forward through her career and we can clearly see how it became more difficult for her to sing and put on her spectacle of a live concert. For the most part, this was completely understandable. As long as Britney was blowing our minds visually, it didn’t matter so much if she was miming along to a track. We always forgave her.

Recently a friend who is a dancer from New York paid me a visit. We got into the subject of Britney’s dancing and started watching
her music videos on YouTube. I asked her if dancers ever saw her as an inspiration. She looked at me like I was crazy and said “Of course, YES!” She went on to explain that when it came to dancing Britney was it, period. She the best of the best. Every dancer my friend knew aspired to hit their moves like Britney did back in the day.
Watching some of her older performances, I could totally understand why people in the dancing world looked up to her. She was bada**! In fact, one of my favorite Britney performance was the infamous VMA “I’m A Slave For You” snake routine from 2001. It was sleek, sexy and on point. At that point in time, there was no way Britney would hit the stage if it wasn’t complete perfection. There’s a lot of people watching after all.

Many say don’t be too hard on her, she’s been through a lot. And that’s true. Let’s go down the list: multiple marriages, a divorce, pregnancy, custody battles, public scrutiny, a major meltdown, battles over control of her assets and a knee injury in 2004. There’s no doubt all of that has taken a toll on Britney’s mind and body.
At this point, is she even happy being in the limelight anymore? One might look at her recent performances and say no, her heart’s just not in it anymore. Her recent Good Morning America
mini-concert was clear proof that the Britney we have today is not the same one we had 10 years ago, which is understandable. But when so many passionate artists like Madonna continue to push the limits well into their 50s, you have to wonder why Britney isn’t holding herself to the same standard she did before. She’s still young. There is no way Britney from a few years ago would hit the stage if she wasn’t fully prepared.
Do most fans care? Doesn’t seem like it. The rush and excitement of just being in the presence of the pop princess is enough to carry the show. But how long will that hold up? Not long if you ask me. If anything, the lack of onstage presence from Britney draws major concerns. Does she need to take a break? it seems like it.
