Did Britney Spears Rip Off The Bellamy Brothers?
In what appears to be solely a matter of getting their name out there in the media, 70′s and 80′s country crossovers [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Bellamy Brothers[/lastfm] are claiming that [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Britney Spears[/lastfm] has ripped them off with her just-released single Hold It Against Me. TMZ reports that the Bellamys are crying foul, saying that it is too identical to their 1979 #1 country tune If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me?).
David Bellamy tells TMZ:
Howard and I have no personal beef with Britney. She’s a talented gal. But professionally, well, in all honesty, we feel completely ripped off. Where’s the originality?
As far as we can tell, the only similarity between the two songs is the double entendre of the phrase “hold it against me.” And if that’s the case, then Groucho Marx (who died two years before the Bellamy Brothers song was released and originated the phrase that became the title of the Bellamy’s song) might have had a case against the Bellamys. The brothers Bellamy have said they have no intention of filing a lawsuit against Spears.
Meanwhile, TMZ reports that Brit’s tune is sitting at the #1 spot on the iTunes charts.
The Bellamy Brothers will be playing the Las Palmas Race Track in Mission, TX on Friday.
