The Rescues Are Living Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”
There was no hotter artist this summer than [lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm], as her [lastfm]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm] collaboration “California Girls” covered that nation in sticky-sweet pop goodness, took up residence in everyone’s brains and firmly refused to budge. The only thing that finally knocked that single from the top of the charts was Perry’s next offering, “Teenage Dream.” The title track of her new album, the song is an account of good times during younger years, and the story of a young girl’s dreams coming true. “Teenage Dream” worked well for [lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm], but it’s not the sort of tune you’d expect to hear from indie-rock upstarts like [lastfm]The Rescues[/lastfm].
What at first sounded like a lark, or some snide indie-rock inside joke, has turned out to be an earnest and faithful cover of one of 2010’s biggest pop hits. Far from poking fun at [lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm], this version of “Teenage Dream” shows [lastfm]The Rescues[/lastfm] to be a serious group of musicians committed to perfecting their craft.
It’s also the perfect showcase for the band’s vocal chemistry, a trait they will no doubt become famous for as their star begins to rise. Band members Kyler England, Rob Giles, Adrianne Gonzalez and Gabriel Mann each sing beautifully, and together they create a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Proving that their remix (or cover, take your pick) of “Teenage Dream” is serious business, [lastfm]The Rescues[/lastfm] cut this video of them performing the track live. Check out their version here, and below that enjoy the sweet sounds (and sights!) of the original “Teenage Dream” as performed by the one and only [lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm] during her blowout Live on Letterman performance at the historic Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City. Enjoy!
