Calling all germophobes!! You can scrub, disinfect, wash and use hand santizer as much as you feel necessary or as long as your skin will let you, but you’ll never be completely germ-free. Did you know that many places you go on a daily or weekly basis are just crawling with bacteria? There’s no escaping it. From public places (of course) to even your own work space, there’s an entire galaxy of germs out there. The good thing is, there is enough good bacteria on us to usually out-smart the bad bacteria, but you never know, and this lest can definitely help you be more aware. Especially since you don’t even have to leave your own home in order to encounter one of the top five germiest places of all time! Check it:
#5: Your Kitchen Sink
You may think your bathroom is dirty, but your kitchen is worse! According to a recent germ study, your kitchen sink drain can harbor more than 500,000 bacteria per square inch. Yes, you scrub and wash with a sponge and disinfecting soap, but guess what? That sponge is crawling with bacteria as well as the faucet, the handles, the basin and generally the counter area around the sink too! The bacteria can be killed by switching to paper towels rather than a sponge, or if you can’t let that sponge go, microwave it for 30 seconds!
No, not the buttons on your jeans or shirts, the buttons you touch in public places such as elevators, vending machines, ATMs, debit machines at the grocery store, etc. Just think of the amount of people that touch those buttons each day and lack of maintenance only worsens the number of germs. Studies have proven that ATM buttons host more germs than a public restroom!
#3: Shopping Cart Handles
Saliva, bacteria and fecal matter are just a few of the nasty substances crawling all over a public grocery store shopping cart. That steak you’re purchasing that’s sealed shut still has germs on the outside of the package. Keep that in mind next time you unload your grocery bags on that freshly cleaned kitchen counter. Thankfully most stores have started offering disinfectant wipes near the carts. Here’s a helpful hint: use them!
#2: Health Clubs
Heath clubs offer a wide range of unhealthy germs. Yoga mats are probably one of the germiest places in a health club along with holding the handles on the bike you ride or the weights you lift. Think about what a bike seat goes through in a day. Or don’t… kind of gross. As well as with the shopping cart handles, use disinfectant wipes to clean your things before use. Also, consider bringing your own yoga mat. And remember to shower at the club. If not, you’re just transporting those germs from the gym to your car and from your car back to your home.
#1: (Drumroll please…) Your Workspace
Your workspace is YOUR workspace. Well, yours and a ton of germs. Studies have found the average desktop has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. WOW! Your office phone alone is likely home to more than 25,000 germs per square inch and your desk, computer keyboard and mouse are close behind. Bleach or alcohol-based cleaners should be used regularly to clean your area and all it’s surfaces. Common office areas like kitchens and copiers are also pretty germy, but not as bad as that microwave. Give that a little wipe down too, before heating up your next lunch.
