Story follows below…
Dear AMP radio,
On July 29th, 2009 my mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. My mind immeadiately flashed to the thought of losing my mother and her not being around to watch my younger brother grow up, as well as me. There was so much I had yet to accomplish and the thought of my mother possibly not being around to witness it tore me apart. She soon began to lose all of her hair and shortly after had a double masectomy in which both of her breasts were removed. Though she didn’t see it, to my brother, my step dad and I, she was still the beautiful woman we always knew. She had to go through two rounds of chemo therapy and radiation, which left her skin covered in a burn/rash. Seeing my mother go through this truly showed me how strong of a woman she was. She went through things I could never imagine handling myself but she remained the same and continued to do as much as she could for my family and everyone around her. She worked through her first round of chemo and attended all of my brothers football games, when her doctors told her that it was dangerous for her to be exposed to all of the germs and bacteria. Through it all, I never heard her complain and always saw her smiling. I’ve been told time and time again how lucky I am to have a mother like her and this has made me realize that and cherish every minute I have with her as well as any person in my life. My story thankfully has a happy ending and my mother beat the cancer and is now in remission. To show her how much she means to me, my friend and I have chosen to do the Susan G Komen 3-day, 60 mile walk for breast cancer. I know this walk won’t put my body through nearly as close as what she had to go through but I want to help fight this disease that affects so many women.
